Bharat Taxi, India’s first co-operative cab service is here. Keep reading to find out all you need to know about this new service.

About Bharat Taxi

Bharat Taxi, a pioneering initiative of the Union Ministry of Cooperation and the National e-Governance Division, is operated by the Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, a multi-state co-operative.

Unlike standard ride-hailing platforms, Bharat Taxi is based on a co-operative ownership model in which drivers, known as Saarthis (charioteers), are also stockholders.

Key Features of Bharat Taxi

Some key features of Bharat Taxi include:

  • Driver-Owned Model: Drivers are co-owners and members of the cooperative, which gives them a stake in the company and its income.

  • Zero Commission: Unlike Ola and Uber, Bharat Taxi does not charge high commissions. Drivers keep 100% of their revenues after paying a small membership fee.

  • Transparent Fare Structure: Fares are government-regulated, with no surge pricing, so journeys are predictable and inexpensive for passengers.

  • App-Based Booking: Users can book rides smoothly via a specialised mobile app, similar to existing ride-hailing systems.

  • Pilot Launch in Delhi: The service began with 650 driver-owners in Delhi and hopes to extend to 5,000 cabs across 20 cities by 2026, with a national objective of 1 lakh cabs by 2030.

Benefits for Passengers

Passengers using Bharat Taxi enjoy a fairer and more transparent ride experience, thanks to government-regulated fares with no surge pricing, ethical travel choices that support driver welfare, and improved service accountability from driver-owners who have a stake in customer satisfaction. It's a socially responsible alternative that combines affordability with community-driven values.

Conclusion

Bharat Taxi is redefining urban mobility with a co-operative model that empowers drivers and ensures fair pricing for passengers. By eliminating surge pricing and promoting ethical travel, it offers a transparent, community-driven alternative to Ola and Uber—making every ride a step toward inclusive progress.
