In a major boost for India–Germany relations, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that Indian travellers will no longer require a transit visa at German airports. The decision, unveiled on Monday during the Chancellor’s official visit to Gujarat, is set to make international travel smoother and faster for Indian passengers flying via Germany.

The move is anticipated to improve people-to-people relations between New Delhi and Berlin and facilitate international travel for Indian nationals.

What Does a Transit Visa Means?

A transit visa is a short-term permit that allows travellers to pass through a country during a layover while traveling to another destination. It confirms that you are only transiting and do not plan to stay in the country beyond your connecting journey.

With this new move, Indian travellers transiting through Berlin and other German airports will no longer need a transit visa.

Earlier, Indian nationals were required to apply for a Schengen transit visa, even when staying within international transit areas at airports like Frankfurt, Munich, or Berlin.

India–Germany Strengthen Ties with New Agreements

Alongside the decision to allow visa-free transit for Indian travellers, India and Germany also announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening economic and security cooperation between the two nations.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Narendra Modi highlighted the growing defence partnership, calling it a reflection of mutual trust and shared strategic vision.

He thanked Friedrich Merz for simplifying defence trade procedures, noting that Germany’s relaxed export norms have significantly benefited India in recent years.
